Possible Essay Topics

Below are some sample essay topics. You may choose to answer one of the following questions for your final paper or you may come up with a question of your own. Remember that the final paper is due on May 18th

Metaphysics Module

  1. Pick two of the philosophers we read this semester. Compare and contrast their views on the relationship between Metaphysics and Epistemology of God.
  2. What does it mean for God to be pure actuality for Aquinas? Explain the Aristotelian roots of this idea and the philosophical consequences.
  3. Explain how Maimonides concludes that “God exists without possessing the attribute of existence.” How does he come to this conclusion? What does he mean? What are the consequences of holding this?
  4. Some of the philosophers we read this semester have held that language is too limited to describe God or the One. Choose two philosophers who discuss this and show how they come to this conclusion, how they seek (or don’t seek) to overcome this obstacle, and explain why you agree or disagree with this position.

Pain and Suffering Module

  1. Choose any of the readings. How does the reading shed light on the current situation vis-a-vis COVID-19 and the social and economic impact of the disease?
  2. At the end of the Book of Job, God tells Job that his friends have spoken falsely about him. What did his friends say that was wrong? Relate this answer to the Problem of Evil more generally.
  3. Consider the relationship between freedom/responsibility and freedom/morality. In Screwtape Letters, we see that freedom can sometimes lead people astray, yet, it seems to be a necessary part of living morally. Would the world be a better place if freedom didn’t exist, as the Grand Inquisitor from “The Grand Inquisitor” believes?
